Named after the commander that built the fort, Major William Lauderdale, the city was originally comprised of three different forts erected during the Seven Years War. The city did not officially begin to develop until the forts were abandoned and the war ended though. In 1911, After the completion of the Florida East Coast Railroad, the city was incorporated and quickly became the county seat of Broward County in 1915. Later, Fort Lauderdale became a prominent US Navy base and pilot training center during World War II. After the war, the population exploded as soldiers returned to the area to live. As of 2006, the US Census Bureau counts the population at 185,804.
